Richard Birchall is one of the UK’s most versatile young musicians, pursuing a varied and colourful career as cellist, arranger, composer, and lyricist. Listen to the score composed by Richard.
As a classical composer, Richard has completed commissions from the Park Lane Group, London Cello Orchestra, Ernest Read Orchestra, Doric, Barbirolli, Tippett and Piatti Quartets, and his music has been performed at the Purcell Room, Wigmore Hall,The Sage Gateshead, King’s Place and other festivals across the UK, in France, Germany, the USA and Korea. His Psycho Suite, commissioned by the Tippett Quartet and transcribed from the original film soundtrack, is available on Signum Classics and has featured on BBC Radio 3 and France Radio. Richard has produced numerous transcriptions for the UK’s leading cello ensemble Cellophony, of which he is a founding member and director, and he has written words and music for a broad range of children’s songs and plays. In September this year Cellophony will give the London premiere of his new work ‘Alice in Wonderland’, narrated by Simon Callow.
Richard has recently completed his studies in Film Music composition at Goldsmith’s College, London.
Richard also works as a concert cellist: as a member of the Philharmonia Orchestra he performs regularly in the world’s finest concert halls, and has appeared as guest Principal Cello with the Northern Sinfonia, Irish Chamber Orchestra and as concertmaster of the London Cello Orchestra; his solo and chamber work has ranged from Wigmore Hall to the catwalk at London Fashion Week.
